don’t play with knives
April 28th, 2005 | by prick |I will try my best to make this post, for reasons that will become apparent when I get to describing the really stupid thing I did yesterday.
I was trying to cut a slit in the lid of a jar-like container yesterday. For what, is not important. What is important is that the lid did not want to be cut. It was made of very thick plastic and the scissors I was using weren’t doing anything. So, I got my hands on a buck knife. This was not my knife, so I should have realized that what I was doing was stupid.
Anyway, I was holding the knife the wrong way and using it the wrong way. So, what happened was not that big of a shock to me or anyone else. As I pushed downward to cut the lid of the jar, the lock on the knife that keeps the blade open slipped and the knife closed! Unfortunately, the knife closed on my right pinky finger!
After the initial impact, I knew something was wrong and as I pulled my hand away and looked at it, I was absolutely sure that something was amiss. My pinky finger was sliced open and bleeding all over! As I curled my pinky, the cut would open and blood poured out.
Thanks to my great friends who were there with me, as they immediately leapt into action and got my finger bandaged. Then, we headed off to Kaiser for my first visit since getting insurance through them. Luckily, the wound was a clean cut. The knife was nice and sharp and not a serrated blade. They used Steri-Strips (adhesive stitches) to close me up and gave me a tetanus shot.
Long story short, if all your friends are telling you that what you are doing is a bad idea… believe them! Now, I have to keep my pinky straight and clean for a few days. Then, I get to clean out the wound and re-bandage! Wheee!

the other lesson learned here is that a sharp knife is a safe knife. you don’t have to try as hard to make the cut, and if you cut yourself the wound is clean, and will heal easily, much like your wound.
glad to hear you can type and that you’re healing fine.
