clutter
September 17th, 2004 | by prick |As I look around my space here, I am constantly reminded of the past. I am also reminded of the theory where one’s living space reflects the state of their mind. Right now, both are extremely cluttered. I desperately need to clean my space and just haven’t been able to find the motivation. I know that cleaning up will make me feel a lot better, but for whatever reason, I am terribly resistant. This probably has a lot to do with my current state of mind, in that I feel a lot of clutter in my brain since coming home from Burning Man.
I should do laundry… yes, that is how I shall begin the cleaning of my mind. I’m weird.

Man, I feel you on the clutter. Every time I try to sit down and study, I end up cleaning…
Interestingly, it kind of relates back to philosophy of mind. Kant believed there were two ways in which human beings actively interpreted their reality - through space and time. We tend to mentally organize first according to where things are and secondly when events happen relative to one another - so if you’re striving for clarity, and your immediate space is cluttered, it imposes a sort of mental clutter as well.
Laundry is never a bad place to start - unless you live in an apartment like me and have to cough up $2.25 per load. Ack.
